When I go into my day job, I'm all about my ipod to block out any chatter (well, bitching really). Lately I've found myself playing this song again and again. It's like a really good book that you don't want to end. You know the kind. You're so wrapped up in the characters and their story that you're actually disappointed when you get to that last page. With this song, my favorite part comes right at the end but it's bittersweet because I always wish the song didn't end.

Obsession of the Week: Dutch Stroopwafels

My friend Aimee (yes, blueberry Aimee from last week) when to Amsterdam for work and brought everyone back stroopwafels as a souvenir. Obsessed does not even begin to cover it!

If you've never heard of them, these yummy little treats are basically two thin waffles with a yummy layer of caramel in between. They are absolutely heavenly!

Now you would think that since they're not that widely available here in the states, I would eat them slowly, savoring each and every bite. But no. She of little self control has already polished off the whole box-- without even trying them softened over a cup of tea (two hot for tea with the 90+ temps plus stifling humidity here in NY).

Now I'll just have to being my search for a place that I can buy them from regularly. So far, I've found these pretty ones from LittleDutchBakery. Now I just have to find a store that carries them in case a craving comes on and I need them in a pinch.

Thanks Aims, for my delicious treat and for yet another food addiction!

Mmmmmm, chocolate

To know me is to know I love chocolate. Well, my husband definitely knows me.

The other day he walked in the door after a long, outdoor shoot for work and my daughter greeted him first. "Oooooh Daaaaaddy!" she said. "You smell gooooood."

He walked over to give me a kiss and my reaction was the same. "What is that?!!!" I asked, sniffing wildly. He gave me a silly grin and reached into his bag, pulling out Axe Dark Temptation Body Spray (they also sell it in solid form and as a body wash). Its tagline? "As irresistible as chocolate." And let me tell you, that tagline couldn't be more true. I am a big fan.

Now, don't expect a sugary sweetness from this yummy scent (that might be a little weird actually). There's a hint of spice to it, which makes it an undeniably masculine scent and one of my absolute favorites.

I poked around online a little and found this absolutely hilarious Argentinian ad for it (this ad deservedly won a Gold Lion at the Cannes International Advertising Festival in 2008!). Check it out:

Obsession of the Week: Blueberries

I'm not really sure why, but until a recent breakfast at my blueberry-obsessed friend Aimee's house I was completely opposed to blueberries. I've always loved strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, just about any berry, but I never gave blueberries a shot.

Since that fateful breakfast, I've been consuming blueberries at an alarming rate. When I poke around to look into any health benefits they may have, it only adds fuel to the fire-- rich in antioxidants and may help reduce belly fat?! Count me in.

This weekend, a couple of my friends and I went blueberry picking at Secor Farms in Wappingers Falls, New York. It was insanely hot outside, but we had a great time. My little 4-year old muffin decided she wants to add "expert blueberry picker" to the rapidly growing list of things she wants to be when she grows up (also on her list: baby doctor, president, juice pop licker).

We brought home lots of blueberries and a few new recipes. My favorite breakfast of late is blueberry waffles with blueberry sauce (the sauce recipe is courtesy of the farm. Not quite sure where I found the waffle recipe, but I've adapted it a bit anyway):

Blueberry Waffles

1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of sugar (or sugar substitute-- I use Splenda)
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
1 egg
1 1/2 cups of milk (I've been using unsweetened almond milk and adding a bit more Splenda to make up for the missing sweetness)
1/3 cup of vegetable oil

Combine the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl first, then stir in the wet ingredients. Heat up your waffle iron while you clean your blueberries. Take out your measuring cup and put a few blueberries in the bottom. Next, add some batter. Alternate until you have 1/2 cup. Pour into waffle iron and cook! I like mine crispy, so I usually turn my iron all the way up and leave them in a little longer.

Microwave Blueberry Sauce (courtesy of Secor Strawberries Inc.)

2 pints of blueberries
1/4 cup of sugar (I used Splenda again)
1 tablespoon of water

In a microwave bowl add blueberries, sugar and water. Mix together, cook on high for 2 minutes. Stir, adding more sugar to thicken if needed. Continue cooking on high for 3 to 5 minutes, checking after 2 minutes each time. When sauce is thick enough, add 1/8 teaspoon of orange extract (I didn't have any, so I added a little vanilla extract instead).
This sauce would be sooooo good on some vanilla ice cream.

I'm always looking for ways to cut costs and ways to be kind to the environment. When a product comes along that lets me do both of these things, my squeals of delight can be heard from miles away!

Enter zJayne and her awesome recycled products that are made from used t-shirts. I can't recall how I stumbled upon her shop, but boy am I glad I did! I noticed that she had dryer pillow sheets, which I've been wanting to purchase for quite some time.

I've read in a few places about the toxicity of dryer sheets. The chemicals used in them have been linked to a variety of not-so-fun things from cancer to irritation of the respiratory system. On top of that, they take hundreds of years to break down. Think about how many dryer sheets you use in a month! It adds up. I decided to purchase a sample dryer pillow sheet and give it a try.

I won't lie, when I opened the package I was a little nervous. The scent of lavender (the pillow sheets are filled with home-grown organic lavender buds) was pretty strong. I was afraid my clothes would end up smelling just as strongly. I was pretty sure my husband would not be fond of smelling like a lavender dream. I threw the pillow into the dryer with our newly-washed load and crossed my fingers.

When I went back down an hour or so later, my fears weren't eased. The smell of lavender filled the room and became even more powerful when I opened the dryer. The smell dissipated a bit while I was folding the clothes and when my husband picked up his newly cleaned t-shirt and put it on, he didn't even notice. Success!

I'm in looooove. This little pillow should last me from 4-12 months as long as I store it in an airtight container between loads. All it takes to refresh the soothing smell (which I need when I find used tissues in my husband's pockets after I've lectured him endlessly on removing everything from them before putting them in the hamper) is a little scrunching. Another perk? You can even use these little sacks as a sachet for your car instead of having those ugly trees hanging from your rearview mirror.

Obsession of the Week: Weddings

What is there not to love about weddings?! I'm mad about all of it!

My husband and I got married about a year ago and my wedding mania has not died down one bit (it helps that my sister got married last week and that I write articles for Best Hudson Valley Wedd ing Ever).

Can we talk about wedding shows for a second? I love them! Bridezillas, Say Yes to the Dress, My Fair Wedding, Rich Bride Poor Bride. You name it and I've probably seen it and enjoyed it way more than my husband would like me to publicly admit. And let me tell you, there's nothing like watching a reality wedding show while you're working out. I've had many an elliptical/Bridezillas date!

For a while, I was saying I wanted to be a wedding planner. My husband's reply to that has always been "One word: bridezillas." He's totally right. I want to do the shopping for the wedding, but I don't want to deal with a deranged bride who is unhappy with the shade of white I used for her table runner. I'd much rather shop around and show the world pretty pictures of weddings or display ideas that will get brides' imaginations flowing.

It's sort of like shopping for something really fun without having to spend a cent of my own money-- now that's an idea that works for me (and I'm pretty sure it works for my husband too)!

What's New...

My little sister got married this weekend! We cried a lot and had lots of fun catching up with family members we haven't seen in a while. It was a great time.

I haven't been creating too much lately with all of the wedding stuff there was to do, so I wanted to share with you a piece that I made for my sister (isn't she preeeetty?).

She really wanted a big, dramatic feather hairpiece that was sort of wild and natural and had a splash of color. We designed this together (I had to reign her in a bit so she didn't end up looking like swamp thing, hahaha!) and tweaked it a few times (it was on a lace headband before she decided to wear her hair up) so that it was exactly what she imagined.
I used a few really fluffy feathers, some more structured feathers that added a nice layer of texture, and some deep purple dried buds that matched my dress (I was the maid of honor) and the irises in her bouquet. Everything was hand sewn and then attached to a comb (we also used bobby pins to make sure it stayed put all day). The end result was something she absolutely adored, so I was happy!

By the way, her cool veil is the same one I wore on my wedding day by Etsian Tessa Kim!

Obsession of the Week: Twilight

First, let me start out by saying that I was an English major in college. By definition, I'm a word nerd. The written word does things to me that "normal" people might be immune to. That said, it's sort of a given that I should be a snob about what I read. I should be an elitist.

So how is it that I'm obsessed with the Twilight series? There are plenty of reasons why a girl in her 20s shouldn't like it. First of all, you find it in the Teen Fiction section of any library or bookstore. Then there's the writing. Fluffy and repetitive (we get it Bella. Edward is breathtakingly hot and icy cold to the touch. Jacob is young and warm and muscular), the writing pretty much sucks. The story itself is an over-the-top soap opera that sounds absolutely ridiculous if you try and explain it to someone (believe me, I did).

Then there are the movies. Let's just put it out there. The actors kind of suck. It helps that they're attractive (Team Edward! --although I will admit that the pasty makeup doesn't really do him justice), but their lack of skill can be totally jarring. So why oh why am I hooked?

There's something about Stephenie Meyer's tale that seems to resonate with women of all ages. Maybe it's the complicated love story. Maybe it's the girl who is just trying to figure out where she fits in in the world. Maybe it's the sort of fairytale quality that we love from the time when the only person we can imagine marrying is our dad. I haven't put my finger on exactly what it is just yet, but there's something about it-- and I'm hooked.

I'm the kind of girl who develops a lot of obsessions. It's a falling in and out of love of sorts. I find something that really "speaks to me" (whatever that means) and I become kind of manic about it. Sometimes I fall out of love with whatever it is just as hard and as fast as I fell in love (hello field hockey, clarinet, and running). Other times, my obsession endures. It can last for months, sometimes years. Either way, it happens fast and it happens often.

I thought it might be fun to share some of my obsessions with you here in a weekly installment. Since I'm never really lacking in the obsession department, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to keep this column going for awhile.

This week my obsession is Florence + the Machine. I'm madly in love (sorry hubby!). So in love that, not only have I been listening to her album Lungs every time I'm in the car, but I'm also listening to it on repeat throughout my five-hour shift at work.

The sound is a combination of rock and soul with boatloads of emotion and a healthy dose of eccentricity. Florence's velvety voice reminds me of a sultry lounge singer-- similar to another of my obsessions, Cat Power. In terms of lyrics, her songs are not for the faint of heart (to give you an idea of what I mean, one of her songs is called "Kiss with a Fist"). Dark and emotional, she is one of a kind.

I loooove tea. I was never really into it until I took an incredible trip to Ireland during college. Just about everywhere we went, we were offered tea. At the time, I didn't even know how I liked mine (today a packet or two of Splenda does the trick).

I'm not sure if it was because tea reminded me of our excellent adventures or if it was that I fell in love with it, but as soon as we got back to the States, I hunted down a box of the Irish tea we drank there. I've been kind of obsessed ever since.

My tea craze has slowly bled into being obsessed with all things tea related. I have about a million little teacups and adore cute little teapots so much that they're slowly starting to take over my cabinets. Luckily for me, my husband loves tea just as much as I do (the teacups and teapots, not so much). We have an entire shelf in one of our cabinets that's like a tea explosion. White, green, black, herbal and in just about any flavor you could want. We could open our own little tea spot.

Lately, I've been wanting to throw a tea party. I know it's summer. I know it's been tropical in the northeast. I know tea doesn't mesh well with heat and humidity. But I love the idea of them! So pretty and feminine-- and when you throw in a woodland-themed kick they're downright magical.

Super Easy How-To: Bridal Shower Favors

I've been a little absent in recent weeks, both in posting here and in tending to my poor little Etsy shop. It's been with good reason though. My sister's getting married on July 10th and I've been busy planning her bridal shower, designing her headpiece with her (more on that in future posts!), and other wedding-related issues-- not to mention the deluge of freelance work I've been pounded with recently (yay!).

I thought I'd share with you one of the crafty little projects that's kept me away (please excuse the less than stellar photos). When my mom and I were thinking about shower favors there were two things that were important to us: 1) they were useful and not a waste of our money and 2) they were reflective of my sister and her soon-to-be hubby. I was also all about it being handmade.

After way too much thought on the subject, I decided to make these cute little flower pots and fill them with sunflower seeds, potting soil, and a gardening trowel. My sister has been talking a lot about wanting to plant flowers recently and she and her fiance love sunflowers (there will be huge ones at their ceremony site and my sister is going to carry a bouquet of cascading sunflowers). I thought this would be perfect (and it's so easy!).

So what do you need to make one of your own?

Terra cotta pot (I got this one for $1 at WalMart)
Outdoor paint (Michaels has a section of outdoor patio paint with their terra cotta pots)
Printed design (more on that later)
Mod Podge
Sealer

First, paint your pots with the outdoor paint (child labor optional!). I chose white for a sort of shabby chic look. Leave it a little streaky for a look that's rougher or coat it thoroughly for a solid color.

While that's drying, go online to find a picture or pattern that you like. I wanted to play off of the black and white damask invitations we sent out for my sister's shower, so I did a Google image search for "damask". I found one right away that worked perfectly. Another great source for free clip art images is The Graphics Fairy. I could spend hours sifting through all of the images she has collected there! Once you find an image that works for you, print it out (you may have to mess with the size a little on a photo editing program like Photoshop or you can try something like Picnik or FotoFlexer).

After letting the ink dry, cut it out. I chose to cut out the pattern in a little heart shape since we were using these for a bridal shower.

Once the paint on the terra cotta pot is completely dry, you can affix your pattern. Spread a layer of Mod Podge on the back of the pattern and press it onto your pot, being careful to smooth out any air bubbles. Once the image is on, lightly apply a coat of Mod Podge on top of it to make sure it really stays on (please note: some smudging may occur during this step. You can use a clean towel to try and wipe away any of the ink that may rub off. Don't go crazy though. Imperfections like those only add to the charm of a shabby chic look).

Let the Mod Podge dry and then coat the whole thing with a sealer for extra protection. Once the sealer dries, your pot is ready. Fill it with flowers, use it to store pens on your desk, the possibilities are endless!

I put a layer of yellow tissue paper in the bottom of mine before placing the trowel and sunflower seeds inside. Next, I filled rounded cellophane bags with potting soil and tied them up with a yellow ribbon.

It was so incredibly easy and the result were these cute little favors that the ladies at our party went wild for!

I am a big fan of Marshalls. While it's admittedly one of those hit or miss kind of places, when I'm there on a good day, I score big. Last week I went to the new Marshall's Mega Shoe Shop in our area for some retail therapy and found these awesome peep toe Steve Madden flats for $25 (they're regularly $69.95 at Nordstrom!).
The smooth, soft suede. The gorgeous emerald green color. The ruffle detail. The price! What's not to love?! I'm positively smitten.

So, of course, I find myself trying to build outfits around these little beauties. Sundresses, jeans and t-shirts, work wear. I want to wear these shoes everywhere! Inspired by them (and in search of more outfit options!) I put together a little outfit with them in mind:

Oh Maillot!

You see the girl at left in the cute little bikini? You know, the one with the smokin' hot body? Yeah, well, that's definitely not me. I'd love to wear that cute suit, but since I had my daughter almost 4 years ago, the outside world has not seen my stomach.

It's not that I think it's too flabby or that I obsess about being able to bounce a quarter off it (though that would be nice). What causes me to cringe at the thought of anyone catching a glance at my old belly is the lovely stretch marks left behind by my pregnancy.

While these gorgeous shiny pink rivulets are far from tragic (I mean, they're there because I housed and nurtured another human being for nine months!), I would really rather not share them with the outside world. At first this seemed to pose a huge problem when I thought about going to one of my favorite places: the beach.

When I thought of one piece bathing suits, I thought of little old ladies with fanny packs and socks with sandals. As a woman in her 20s, I had no desire to find myself in the same category. I didn't want anything boxy or shapeless, which is all I thought was out there when it came to one pieces.

Slowly but surely I've come to realize that there are some hot little one piece numbers out there. Take the suit at right, for instance. This pretty little maillot (which is another word for one piece) from Anthropologie is way more va va voom than grandma. From the cut, to removable halter strap to the twisted bodice and fun print, this suit is way more my style than the baggy skirted suits I've seen out there.

Style Crush: Ann Curry

I realize the title of this post might have you scratching your chin and letting out a big "Huuuh?" News anchors aren't generally thought of as stylish. In fact, when I think of a news anchor I think of boxy suits, overly coiffed hair and eery, toothy grins. But the Today Show's Ann Curry has a laid back, approachable style that I absolutely adore.
Curry often wears flowy, empire tops and wide leg pants (see photo at right for a great example). She also wears lots of cute dresses in classic silhouettes (think a-limes and 50s styles). More often than not, the color palette is muted. She wears lots of solid, neutral colors that are a little earthy and ooze a relaxed sophistication.

Curry's style also seems to be influenced a bit by her Japanese heritage. There have been so many times that I've seen her in something reminiscent of a kimono or an obi --with a bit of Western flair (of course, I didn't come across any examples to show you). And she nearly always gives off a calm, centered yogi vibe.

Her make-up is generally natural looking and glowy and if her hair is not pulled up in a loose bun, it's usually casually tucked behind her ear.

I just can't get enough! I just adore her (in fact, my husband's a little jealous). Because I'm so enamored, I went on a little hunt and collected a few pieces that I think Ann Curry would love to add to her wardrobe:

Warning, this post may contain more information about me than you'd like to know. Proceed with caution. ;)

I had the Today Show on in the background while I was doing a little work from home this morning and caught the tail end of a segment on bras. I can't even tell you what the segment was about (I think I saw a headline about the bra turning 100?), but it still got me thinking.

I have a love-hate relationship with the bra. For the most part, my girly side adores them. I love the idea of a pretty bra, even if it's one that makes absolutely no sense to wear under your clothes (I'm talking to you, $257 La Perla Venere Push-Up with your feather tassle). There's another side of me that wishes I didn't have to wear one (trust me, I do). And then there's the side of me that loathes bras because it seems to be impossible to find one that fits me properly.

Apparently, all woman have one breast that is larger than the other. For me, this difference seems to be significant. No matter what I do, my right breast always tries to escape. It creates a lovely bubble effect that results in staring for all the wrong reasons.

Enter Linda the Bra Lady. Working in Manhattan's Upper East Side, Linda has made it her mission to help women find the right fit. Her website even has a troubleshooting section that gives answers to a variety of bra problems, from falling shoulder straps to lumpectomies. If the tips on her website don't help, you can also schedule an appointment to be fitted by Linda (of course, it helps if you live in the New York metropolitan area). I plan to combine a couple of her tips (see: Solutions for Uneven Breasts and "Quad Boob" Solutions, hahaha) in the hopes of finding the right fit. We shall see if I need more help than that.

Filled with supportive and genuinely caring people, Etsy Project Embrace was started when Laura Slocum, a fellow Etsian, was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer almost a year ago (I'm happy to report that today she is cancer free and currently doing maintenance chemo). Her Etsy buddies got together and formed this fabulous group which has now swelled to a huge community of artists with a common purpose: to support those diagnosed with and affected by cancer. For the Boys

So, is it just me or are guys incredibly difficult to by for? With girls you can always fall back on something that smells or looks pretty. Some bath and body stuff. A pretty bouquet. Jewelry. You can't really go wrong. But I have the absolute WORST time finding gifts for the men in my life.

My husband is a big Mets fan and he also likes to cook. During the last few years I've bought him anything he could ever possibly need or want in relation to these two things. When I felt those options were tapped out, I went on a sweater rampage, buying him a new one for every occasion that came up. Now, with Father's Day rapidly approaching, I have no clue what to get him (or my father-in-law or brother-in-law, whose birthday happens to be a few days before Father's Day).

With less than a month to go and at least three gifts for men to buy, I've decided to make Fridays a fellas day here. My beloved show is ending this weekend in a 2 1/2 hour long bonanza. I'm equal parts elated and devastated. My husband and I are such huge LOST dorks though, we'll probably start rewatching it again from season one pretty much immediately.

If you don't know anything about LOST, I probably shouldn't try to explain it to you. If I was out of the loop and someone tried to get me hooked on it by telling me about smoke monsters and sideways realities and an island with crazy electromagnetic forces, I would roll my eyes and never give it another thought. I'm not too into sci-fi or monsters. But LOST is so much more than that. It's smart and well written. The characters are well developed and the actors do a great job. Most of all, it makes you think and it relates back to reality in unexpected ways. I just can't gush about it enough!

Another thing about LOST is that it has a cult following. It's fans are crazed about it and there are countless fansites and forums dedicated to it. There are also lots of talented artists who also happen to be LOST fanatics. I've collected a small sample of the LOST art out there as a sort of farewell to my favorite show ever. Tear.

Style Crush: Infinity Scarves

I know it's mid-May and it's starting to get warm and steamy in some places, but I'm seriously in love with infinity scarves right now. I started noticing them on celebrities at first and then saw more and more of them cropping up on Etsy.

Now I know when you think "scarf" you typically think of snow and ice and all things chilly (see Rihanna in her furry scarf which I don't like, but she totally pulls off), but there are lots of lightweight options that are great for keeping warm in air conditioned places during the summer.

Yum: Banana Pancakes

So after my last (kind of nasty) attempt at making banana pancakes, I was on the hunt for a delicious, healthy recipe that tastes a little less like cardboard. I wanted moist. I wanted smooth. I wanted sinfully delicious! After an arduous search (read: typing "banana pancakes" into Google), I found a great one on recipezaar.com:

(note: if you're like my husband and are not so into the whole banana thing, this recipe would be just as delicious with a cup of your favorite berries instead!)

Ingredients:

3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar (I used Splenda)
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cocoa powder (I doubled it!)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup skim milk (I used vanilla soy milk)
2 ripe bananas
2 egg whites

Directions:

Sift the flour into a medium-sized mixing bowl (this is especially important for the wheat flour, as there can be chunky pieces in it).
Combine the rest of the dry ingredients (not the bananas) with the flour.
In a smaller bowl, mash the bananas.
Mix the wet ingredients with the bananas.
Pour the wet ingredients into the medium-sized bowl that holds the dry ingredients. Stir.
Heat your griddle on medium/medium high heat and spray with a non-stick cooking spray.
Scoop the batter on and cook until bubbles begin to appear. Flip.

Serving size: 5 (if you need less, check out the link for the recipe. There's an easy serving size converter on the website.... Another great feature of the website? The nutrition facts are given on a panel on the side)

I drizzled these tasty little guys with honey for an added kick of sweetness. Serve with some berries on the side and you have a (sweet!) healthy breakfast that you'll be craving again tomorrow morning! (Can you tell I'm a big fan of this recipe?)

And banana pancakes always make me think of Jack Johnson...

Days Six and Seven: I see the Light!

Day Six:
I woke up today knowing that I only had two more days to work through, which made it way easier. I also decided to experiment with a couple of new food ideas to shake up what has become a pretty boring food routine.

First, I decided to try making some "high fiber banana pancakes." As I made them, my husband referred to my mixture as gruel. They weren't that bad, but they were awfully grainy and mighty strong in the bran flavor. If I make them again I'll use more banana than they call for (1/2 of a banana just didn't cut it) and I'll drizzle honey all over them. I just might be able to get over the texture with those little changes.

Next, I had one of my best buds over for lunch. Since we usually have a little dessert of sorts (or a lot of dessert), I decided to attempt to make some frozen yogurt. It was interesting to say the least. I found a recipe for it on the Body by Glamour recipes page that basically looked like a smoothie that is then frozen. So, I hunted around a little and found a coconut smoothie recipe that sounded delish. I just adapted it a bit:

1 cup of coconut juice (I had coconut milk, so I used that)
1/2 cup of ice
1/2 cup of coconut meat (I only had shredded coconut so I used that. Don't!)
1/2 cup of ice cream (I used fat free Greek yogurt and added a couple of packets of sweetener)
1/2 banana (I threw in strawberries instead)

Glamour's recipe said to freeze it for 5 to 10 minutes, but I didn't take into account that I had all that coconut milk and they had no liquid in their recipe. We ended up having a chilled coconut-strawberry soup (with lots of shredded coconut chunks to get stuck in our teeth... this is why I don't cook!). The flavor was good at least--and we had fun! That's what counts, right?

Breakfast: banana pancakes
Snack: guacamole and veggies
Lunch: salad
Snack: an attempt at homemade frozen yogurt, nuts
Dinner: black bean burger (without bun), assorted veggies

Day Seven:
I breezed through the last day knowing there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Though there were Peppermint Patties shoved in my face (courtesy of my daughter, who couldn't understand why I wouldn't eat one) and delicious baked goods staring at me at the coffeehouse (I just got a decaf iced sugar free caramel), I was ok with saying no. Surprisingly ok with it, actually. Hopefully this trend will continue now that I know the cleanse is over.

So what (if anything) did I learn from this little experiment?

I have way more willpower than I thought
I can survive without chocolate (and packaged foods too!)
Eating fresh makes me feel good

I guess the real test will be in the next couple of days. Will I use this new-found willpower to eat less chocolate? Will I fall back into my old patterns? Will I eat less packaged foods and more fresh? I guess time will tell...

Day Five: Phew

Today was a breeze. I'm not sure if it's because I know I'm almost there or if I'm just getting used to it. My biggest problem was a craving for Peppermint Patties. My mom always keeps some on hand because my daughter is obsessed with them, so between knowing they were there and smelling them on my daughter's breath when we stopped in for a visit, I was seriously aching for one. I managed to get out unscathed though and I was fine for the rest of the day.

Another issue I've been having is the lack of foods I'm able to eat. I'm sick of just about everything I've been eating this week. I'm mostly sick of knowing there's not much I can eat. When the week is over I plan on eating a lot more whole foods, like the fruits and veggies I've been living on. But I'll be glad to have the option of carbs like bread and English muffins. I could really go for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

On to Day Six!

Breakfast: berry smoothie, nuts
Lunch: apple with natural peanut butter
Snacks: nuts, guac, veggies
Diner: grilled chicken, brown rice, broccoli and sugar snap peas

I have so many new and exciting pieces coming, but I'm keeping them under wraps while I'm in a sort of transition period. Big changes are coming soon so watch for an announcement!

One of the supplies I'm working with right now are feathers. I just love them! Soft and dreamy, they make everything seem a little lighter and airier. At the same time, with just the smallest tweaks you can add an edge to them that give a harder contrast to all that sweetness.

They can also give off a sort of fairytale vibe, making them perfect for brides. I'm not sure where the feather/fairytale connection comes in (feather pens? feather fans? feather hair pieces?), but (for me at least) it's a strong association.

Day Four: AHA!

So I realized why this has been such a difficult couple of days for me (TMI warning!). My monthly friend paid me a visit. It's no wonder why 1) I needed chocolate so badly, 2) I was so cranky about it, and 3) I felt like a bloated whale. If I can go chocolate free this week, I can do anything.

Today wasn't so bad. Maybe it was the realization that there was a physical reason for my out-of-control cravings. Maybe it was because my body's getting used to existing without constant chocolate boosts. I think it was a bit of each of these things, plus the fact that I was really busy all day. My daughter and I did a lot of gardening in the morning/early afternoon. Afterwards, I moved some furniture around in our office. We then picked up a desk (for all my crafting supplies, yay!) found on Freecycle with the help of one of my best buds and her big car. By the time we got home and got the desk put back together and situated I was exhausted. There really wasn't much time in the day to think about my old friend cocoa.

Here's hoping that Day Five goes just as smoothly!

Day Three: Ugh.

Today started out great. I was feeling good. Really proud that the first two days went off without a hitch. I cruised through the morning and didn't even have any post-lunch cravings. I actually wondered what I would have to say about today.

Then I went home.

I'm not sure what it was, but the second I walked in the door I had a fist-clenching craving for some chocolatey deliciousness. Still proud of myself for coming this far (yes, two chocolate-free days in a row is a HUGE accomplishment for me), I knew I couldn't give in. But that didn't stop me from wanting to stomp and pout like my nearly four year old. Why am I doing this again?

Luckily, today is my daughter's ballet day so I wasn't home for long before we had to run out. My husband and chef has a night shoot tonight so I knew I wouldn't be well fed. I decided to call my mom and see if she was interested in going to a local restaurant that has a killer shrimp Caesar salad. She was.

My next huge, unrelenting craving came while eating my yummy salad. I'm one of those people who needs something sweet after a meal. Knowing I wouldn't get that, I wanted it even more.

All I have to say about today is UGH.

Breakfast: 3 egg whites with pepper and onions, decaf coffee, strawberries
Snack: more strawberries
Lunch: salad (spinach, grilled chicken, almond slices, red wine vinaigrette... noticing a trend? when I like something I tend to obsess...)

Day Two: You've GOT to Be Kidding Me

Feeling proud of myself after my successful first day, I marched into work on Day 2 focused and ready to avoid chocolate. I even made sure my wallet was empty of singles or enough coins to purchase a candy bar in case of a moment of weakness in front of the vending machine. So what is the first thing I see? Girl Scout cookies! And not just any Girl Scout cookies (I can avoid the shortbread ones). But THIN MINTS!!! Arguably the BEST Girl Scout cookies (ok, Samoas and Tagalongs are pretty delicious also). A little later, I realized there were two mini Peppermint Patties in my purse. I knew that it was going to be a rough day. The universe was out to get me.

I made it through the morning strong and unwilling to bend. But the morning is never my problem area (ok, I shouldn't say never). It's the mid-afternoon slump that absolutely kills me. Somehow though, I made it. Even with those Thin Mints in my face all day. After lunch, I decided to go to the vending machine with the little bit of change I could collect from what was left in my purse and buy some peppermint Lifesavers (wee bit of a downgrade, no?). Somehow this got me through the rest of work.

When I got home, I decided to take my daughter to the mall for some retail therapy. The problem? The Great American Cookie place. Smack in the middle of the mall (and therefore, our travels) it is a shiny beacon of deliciousness. Of course my daughter wanted one. And of course (the sucker that I am) I couldn't say no. Thankfully, she decided on a sugar cookie (the easiest to turn down) and I was ok with catching a fleeting whiff of it as she devoured half. Day two was a success.

Breakfast: Strawberry Smoothie (same as yesterday) and peanuts
Snack: Strawberries
Lunch: Salad (spinach with the leftover chicken/dressing from day one plus almond slivers)
Snack: 1 TBS each of guacamole and hummus with veggies (carrots, red peppers, cucumbers)
Dinner: Barbeque chicken, 1/2 cup of brown rice, broccoli and green beans

Day One: A Delicious Dilemma

I have a problem. It's a problem that takes over my life. I hide. I sneak. I destroy evidence. I act a little bit like a raccoon in the garbage.

My name is Jen and I'm a chocoholic.

While this might not sound like a serious issue, I promise you it is. I can't just eat the recommended sliver of dark chocolate per day. I will stuff my face with all of the chocolate in sight until there is nothing left--and believe me I search high and low to make sure there is nothing left. Afterwards, I feel disgusted and a teensy bit ashamed. Oh chocolate. It is delicious and it is my dilemma.

For this reason (and possibly because my four-year-old told me the other day that my "belly is getting weally big"), I decided to start this "healthy detox" I've been talking about for months (after reading it in Glamour magazine.... It's ok to laugh. My husband does too). Nothing too crazy. Just a little week-long cleanse of sorts: no sugar, caffeine, alcohol, added salts or packaged foods. Doesn't sound too bad, right? But you don't understand my addiction!

Chocolate is not something I have once in awhile. Lately, it has become something I eat several times a day. I'll put chocolate soy milk in my coffee in the morning. I'll drink hot chocolate at work. I'll hit up the vending machine after lunch. When I get home, I'll either pick at whatever chocolate might be in the house or I'll take my daughter out and just happen to stumble upon some chocolate in our travels. I have no self control.

I decided that the best way to tackle my little "issue" is to force myself to avoid it. Once I get past the withdrawal and feelings of loss and desperation (oh the horrors! no chocolate covered strawberry dessert?!), I'll have an easier time controlling myself. But to get to that point, I need a) a distraction. Doing a detox provides me with just that. It's not just chocolate that I can't eat this week. There are other things too--like pretzels and sangria! And b) accountability. By broadcasting my little experiment here, I am much more likely to stick to it (mostly so I don't look like a big jerk).

So, I've decided to keep a little food diary here and to relate my trials and tribulations to whoever might be listening...

Day One:
Breakfast: smoothie (greek yogurt, frozen strawberries, light V8 Splash) and a hard-boiled egg
Lunch: salad (spinach, grilled chicken, almonds, red wine and vinegar dressing)
Snack: guacamole with veggies
Dinner: Greek chicken, salad with an oil and lemon dressing, hummus and veggies

Believe it or not, I didn't feel very deprived. I had my regular mid-afternoon super craving, but I soldiered through. Most of my afternoon was spent wrangling my daughter and nephew and preparing food (dinner, hummus, guac, cutting veggies for the rest of the week), so my mind wasn't occupied on finding and devouring chocolate. We'll see about tomorrow....

Ecolicious: Bath and Body

I'm not sure why, but when I think of "organic" the last thing I think of are beauty products. My head automatically goes to foods, cleaning products, even clothing, but considering organic bath and body products is just as important as all those other things.

"Organic" basically means that the product was produced in an environment free of chemicals and is regulated by the USDA. If pesticides were used, they were plant or animal based. Something that is "all natural" is also grown naturally, but may contain chemicals like those found in pesticides. If it's important to you to avoid ingesting chemicals or breathing them in while cleaning, you probably don't want to apply chemicals directly to your skin. Luckily, there's a wide array of organic bath and body products available.

Style Crush: Film Noir

I am in love with 1940s film noir fashion (see my wedding pictures for proof). Classic and cool, this style manages to be sexy and feminine while often incorporating a dark, mysterious edge. Maybe it's the juxtaposition that draws me in. I'm not really sure. All I know is that I'm obsessed.

The women in these movies, like Barbara Stanwyck at left, Lana Turner (in The Postman Always Rings Twice) at right, or Ingrid Bergman (in Notorious) below, manage to be so sultry without showing very much skin. There's also a timeless quality to their looks. Although you can tell from their hairstyles that these photos are old, their outfits would not be out of place today. And glamour? Good lord, look at the glamour! I'm in looooove.

The movies are pretty fab as well. A lot like "hardboiled" 1920s crime novels, film noir stories generally revolve around a crime of some sort. Many times the women in these films are "femme fatales" --beautiful women who charm unsuspecting men into questionable circumstances. And the cinematography is gorgeous! There is a lot of play with lights and shadows in these films and the result is often stunning.

Holy Guacamole!

About a month ago I came across the most delicious guacamole recipe on lillyella. Incredibly simple (this being key if you're like me and have trouble finding your way around the kitchen, nevermind making anything in it) and quick, it's the perfect snack to whip up for a party or dinner with friends. And did I mention that it's delicious?!

Being a huge onion fan and not so big into cilantro, I adjusted the recipe to my liking. Next time I'm going to experiment with a little garlic. Yuuuum!

So what did I do today? I took my little munchkin outside to beautify a piece of our backyard.

Big trees tower above this odd little hill, so it seems to collect leaves and broken twigs and branches at an astonishing rate. I've had this vision of covering it in wildflowers so that I can sit out on the deck in the summer and just drink in the beauty (I'm taking this Earth Momma thing to a whole new level, eh?).

So we raked the leaves and all those little twigs and threw some flower seeds down. Whether anything grows is a whole other story--my thumbs aren't even close to being green--but we had fun and that's what counts, right?

Inspiration: Blossoms

I'm in love with this time of year. Just when the winter blahs seem to sink their teeth into my flesh for good, I start to notice little bursts of green. A hint of grass, some teeny buds on a tree. Before you know it the trees and flowerbeds are in their full blooming glory and my mood suddenly becomes much more positive.

To me, blossoms mean a fresh start. New year, new season, new life. Aside from being beautiful, there's something almost magical about them. Have you ever gone for a walk and a slight breeze picks up, showering blossoms from the trees overhead all over you? It's like a moment straight out of a fairy tale.

Alright, so enough waxing poetic. I won't stay all Earth Mother on you. The point is, I'm loving anything flowery right now, as is totally obvious by all of the pieces I'm currently working on: flowery hair pretties, brooches and necklaces.
